The 7 Biggest Original Diamonds Before The Cut

By Daniel Anderson

One day while surfing the internet, I discovered diamond jewellery with large and beautiful settings. I looked at my right hand and saw my own, personal solitaire diamond ring. I suddenly thought of the day my special gentleman asking me the big question. That was the day he gave me this spectacular diamond engagement ring. Several years later, he revealed that he painstakingly selected the band from a stunning assortment of diamond engagement rings uk. Since he gave me that diamond ring, I became a diamond lover.

Diamonds are the best gemstones. Settings don't matter to me. It doesn't matter if the stone is set on a pendant, a pair of earrings, a ring, or any other type of jewellery. Or in any other setting devised by man as long as the diamond's luster and shine can be clearly seen. Since I am already surfing the net, I will make a list that contains the seven biggest rough diamonds mined all over the world. The one that takes the crown is the Cullinan diamond, which weighed at an amazing 3,106.75 carats. Thomas Evan Powell uncovered the stone in 1905 and named it after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the owner of Premier Mine in South Africa where the stone was found. The stone was cut in two by the Asscher Brothers. The bigger piece was called Cullinan 1, or the Great Star of Africa, and Cullinan 2 was named the Lesser Star of Africa. The two stones are presently the main compoentns of UK's Crown Jewels.

The second biggest diamond is the Excelsior Diamond found by Kaffir, a miner, in June 1893 in Jagersfontein Mine located in South Africa. Smaller than the Cullinan but no less regal, the Excelsior has 970 carats. The third largest rough diamond is the Star of Sierra Leone found in February 1972 in the Diminco mine. It is believed that there were 13 flawless diamonds out of the 17 pieces cut from the first stone. The Star of Sierra Leone is in the model of a brooch.

The fourth largest rough diamond is the Incomparable Diamond uncovered by a young girl in the debris near to the MIBA Diamond Mine which can be found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It weighted around 890 carats in its rough state. The Great Mogul Diamond, which was found in 1650 in Southern India, is the fifth biggest diamond worldwide. In its rough state, the stone weighed 787.5 carats. Emir Jemla gave the diamond as a gift to Shah Jahan, Emperor of India at that time. Shah Jahan was the one who created the Taj Mahal for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Jean Baptiste Tavernier, a famous jeweler described the stone as "The stone is of the same form as if one cut an egg through the middle."

The sixth biggest rough diamond is the Millennium Star weighing 777 carats. It was the Steinmetz Diamond Group that cut the stone. It was spotted in 1990 from the mine of Mbuji-Mayi district. This is in Zaire. Currently, the owner of the diamond is De Beers. Last but not the least is the Golden Jubilee diamond which was discovered in Premier Mine in South Africa. It weighs 755.5 carats.
