The Truth About Work Gloves

By Sherry Gross

The human hand is a very important part of the anatomy. This could very well be our advantage over the other animal species that are found in nature. The hands allow one to do many things and accomplish more work. Going through daily life activities is made easier and simpler with the use of our hands.

It is also very important as a means of expression. With a simple movement, the hands can express what he or she cannot say. It is most important for those who cannot hear and talk to be able to communicate, and they do so with the use of their hands. It is also used by the blind to somehow get idea about his or her surroundings. Due to its many uses, it should always be protected. One way to do this is through the use of work gloves.

A glove is a special kind of garment. It is used to cover the hands, often as a protection from the cold. The earliest ones sport a very simple appearance as it is used in commonplace areas. When the women thought of wearing it as a fashion accessory, the simple glove underwent a transformation and were available in linen, silk, and lace. Queen Elizabeth I further increased the fashion element of the said garment by wearing lavish gem encrusted ones during her appearances.

Today, they do not only serve fashion purposes. There are various kinds of gloves to perfectly suit every need. There are even peculiar designs such as the fingerless variety that does not have coverings for the fingers, as only the palm is being covered. This weird design is actually beneficial for those who play musical instruments such as the piano because the plain ones can get in the way when you try to play a particularly fast piece.

There are also ones that are made of a disposable material that allows you to throw them away after use. These kinds are to be used only once, which makes it appropriate for medical uses. You see doctors and nurses and other medical professionals use them all the time, especially when they have to protect themselves from contact with bodily fluids of a patient.

They are also a staple commodity in most sports. The catcher of a particular team uses a baseball glove to catch the ball. Archers also use gloves to provide maximum support. Perhaps the most famous sports gloves are those used in boxing. They often resemble inflated mittens. They are padded to protect the fists of the boxer and to cushion the blows, or else they will incur more serious wounds and other related injuries.

Animal handlers, especially those who work with animals that can attack them with sharp claws and beaks use a sturdy type made from the strongest leather. It is also of utmost importance in falconry. The razor sharp talons of the bird can cut through the arm when the bird perches on top of it, so it is very important that a falconer uses a special hand covering especially when training a bird.

Gauntlets or those that extend up to the arm are used by firemen when they respond to fire alerts. They protect the upper extremities from getting burned. They also protect the arms from too much heat.

For those who work with their hands all the time to do hard labor, their hands are more vulnerable to the development of splinters and blisters. This is why gloves are important, especially when you work with thorny plants or masonry work. You also need a pair when you happen to work with electrical wiring.
