The Abaya Is An Example Of How Modest Islamic Clothing Is Mandatory In Some Middle East Cultures

By Rosella Campbell

In the Middle East it is common to see women wearing clothing that is unfamiliar to the Western world. In some countries it is illegal for women to appear in public without putting on certain garments. But, there is no reason why, in some countries, modest islamic clothing must be course and unattractive.

The holy book of Islam, the Qeran, tells that all people should dress modestly. Women wear a hijab, which is a veil that covers the head and front of the upper body. Once a girl reaches puberty, she has to wear it outside of her family home. If male visitors are in the house, women must wear it also.

Hijab is an Arabic word meaning veil. Al-hijab means separating the world from God, or Allah. Privacy and religious conformity are important in the Muslim world.

Some countries, Iran is one example, make it a law to wear the hijab outside the home. Another garment, the chador, is a cloak that covers the hair with a hemline that goes to the floor. In modern times, it is made of fine material to avoid the heat.

More restrictive garments are worn by women in some cultures. The Taliban are required to wear a burka in public. This garment covers all of a women except for the eyes.

For Muslim men it is suggested they be covered from the naval to the knees. All clothing, for both genders must be loose fitting and modest. In contrast, in Egypt, the hijab is not allowed to be worn in private and state schools. However, more than ten percent continue to wear it. Others wear a headscarf.

Until they reach puberty, young girls need not wear the hijab. In many Muslim cultures, the age is not stated. It is usually considered to be at puberty that they begin to wear it.

The women in the Gaza Strip were encouraged to begin wearing hijab, the full covering in the 1970s and 1980s. They were coerced, although not legally forbidden to appear in public without this garment. In the course of this change, women who did not wear it were harassed.

There is one country where a woman can be beaten for not wearing a burka. Older women act as clothing police moving up and down streets to check other women. A certain fanatic streak seems to be in effect.

Currently, there is no need for the abaya to be drab and unadorned. There are many that are quite fashionable. But, they still cover the arms to the wrists, are floor length and the head is still covered.

An abaya trimmed in rich gold colored sequins and lace around the wrists and hemline may be worn for a special event. A lace one is lined in emerald green or black to show through the lace. Full sleeves are trimmed in lace on another.

A fashionable burka might have golden beading on the front and another might be sewn of contrasting fabric. A fancier abaya has a full ruffle around the hemline and full sleeves. There is a beautiful one with green sequins on the bodice, obviously intended for a special occasion. Each Islamic country has its own dress code for women.

  1. Following all the rules and regulation followed by the people of Islam, Muslims do prefer wearing fashionable clothes. Muslims living all over the world are now going towards the new fashion trends. I'm also a Muslim girl living in US. I have been buying clothes from EastEssence since the time I've started wearing fashionable clothes.
