Important Tips For Selecting And Maintaining Full Lace Wigs

By April Briggs

Whether someone has lost hair due to cancer treatment or alopecia, or just wants a different look for a special event, a wig can achieve this effect. One of the most popular types are the lace wigs, which consist of a lace cap worn tight to the scalp along the wearer's hairline with realistic-looking tresses that appear to be actually growing from the scalp. They come in a wide assortment of styles, and can be worn in many ways.

The majority of these wigs are made from human hair which provides more styling options and a more realistic appearance. Full lace units cover the entire head. They can be parted anywhere and styled in a ponytail or updo. Lace front wigs and lace frontals differ in that they feature lace only at the front of the piece, and are used to provide added fullness in the front.

In order for the wig to stay looking good and last for several years, it will need to receive proper care by the wearer. Most can be worn for up to two or three weeks before they require a new application. Wearers who have lost their own hair tend to be able to wear the wig longer because the adhesion is stronger.

It's important to choose a wig cap color which matches one's own skintone as closely as possible. The color choice should be based on the hairline not the whole body. In general those with light skin should choose transparent, medium or tan complexions are best with beige, and darker skinned people can use light or dark brown.

The type of hair the wig is made from can vary in terms of texture, weight, thickness, and sheen. Some are more easily dyed another color if desired or styled than others. The Chinese remy style is the thickest and best for dying and styling, while the Indian remy offers fine, silky, sleekness, and Malaysian and Mongolian remy styles provide thickness and shine and matte waviness respectively.

Any wig will look better if it is applied correctly. The best way to ensure a proper fit is to wear a wig cap or style one's natural hair very close to the scalp such as cornrow braids. The excess lace will need to be trimmed to achieve a good fit along the hairline, and it must be well secured with combs and glue. If a more natural hairline is desired, simply pulling a few strands or baby hairs through from the natural hair underneath can produce this effect.

A wig stand should be purchased for safe storage of the wig as this will help it keep its shape. For washing, use two spray bottles, one containing a water/shampoo solution, and the other containing a water/conditioner solution. Spray wig with shampoo mix and comb it through then rinse out and repeat with the other bottle, pat dry and place it on the stand to continue drying.

Wigs fashioned from human hair can be styled more or less the same as one's natural hair. It is safe to use blow dryers, curlers, curling irons, and straighteners on remy hair wigs, but it's not advisable to try to straighten a very curly design, as it will likely go frizzy. If wearing the wig to bed, wrap one's head in a protective scarf and use a satin pillowcase.
