Use A Diamond Clarity Chart To Check Values

By Anthony Clark

The four Cs of diamonds determine their value: cut, carats, color, and clarity. While all these factors are technical, the effect of flaws is possibly the most difficult factor to determine. This makes the use of a diamond clarity chart essential for both amateurs and experts to arrive at an accurate estimate of value.

The major factors which impact on this measure are Inclusions and blemishes. Inclusions are internal cracks or foreign material embedded in the stone which do not affect its structural integrity unless they are very large. Blemishes, on the other hand, appear on the surface, can weaken its structure and are very undesirable.

Very few naturally-occurring diamonds achieve a flawless grading, with no blemishes or occlusions present. Sometimes stones are cut so as to eliminate flaws, but this practice can result in an overall lower value, as the size (carats) and cut may be harmed. While flawless is an excellent grading, the overall balance of the different factors is also important.

Flaws are in fact valid evidence that a stone is of natural origin, although there are sometimes flawless natural stones. While they do affect the value of stones adversely, a few inclusions are no great detriment. Large clouds can affect the sparkle, but flaws are useful in distinguishing between stones.

When evaluating a stone, it is inspected under 10-power magnification. This makes it easy to see the flaws and it becomes much easier to rank it according to the relevant chart. Without artificial aid it is impossible to see everything affecting the structure.

People wishing to invest in diamonds or simply purchasing diamond jewelry can make a better choice if they are aware of the different factors. A jeweler should have a diamond clarity chart available for customers. Being better informed about the grades helps decide between attractive pieces, although it is the total combination and balance of all factors which is most important.
