Caring For Leather With Venetian Shoe Cream

By Tanisha Berg

Leather products are usually expensive and in order to prolong their longevity, they need to be treated in a particular way. A product like Venetian Shoe cream has been around since the early 1900s and this product as well as many others are available from online stores today. This enables one to compare prices and look for the products that offer the ability to not only clean but protect and condition the leather as well.

Leather cannot be treated in the same way as synthetic materials. It started its life as part of a living animal. In order to keep it supple and soft once it is no longer part of the animal, it has to be treated in a particular manner. This includes using a quality product for lubrication and if this is not done, it becomes brittle, dry and liable to crack.

Shoes are just one of the many items made of leather that require consistent maintenance. Shoes can be made of many different types of leather and particular products are designed to work on particular types of leather. For example, a product intended for calfskin may not be suitable for use on suede.

A product containing a combination of cleaning and lubricating ingredients offers good value for money. Creams soak into the leather and allow it to breathe. Waxes give a good shine and effectively cover scuffs. Cleaners should remove dirt, stains and any build up of old polish which can prevent the leather from breathing properly. However, they need to be gentle enough not to harm the leather and should not not contain any harsh chemicals or artificial thickeners.

When considering such products, ease of application is important. A product with a thicker consistency is easier to apply. Products usually have to be shaken before use to achieve the right consistency and might otherwise appear too thin and watery. Only a small amount of product is necessary and any excess does not improve the effect and takes longer to dry. What is most desirable is a nice even application with enough moisture for a good shine.

These products are available in neutral as well as a variety of colors. A cream with a neutral color is particularly helpful when treating two tone shoes. Neutral is often a good choice but it can darken up the leather a bit, depending on its grain and porosity. Whatever color is chosen, it should match the color of the original finish as closely as possible and not darken it too much.

Expensive shoes are an investment and should last for many years, if not for a lifetime. However, this will not be the case if they are not cared for properly. Proper care involves using the right products and even though some expense is incurred in their purchase, the results are more than worthwhile. Sometimes shoes that are older and have started to look dull could respond to the right treatment.

Keeping shoes beautifully maintained prolongs their life and makes investing in expensive shoes worthwhile. Using quality products on shoes regularly covers and repairs the damage of daily wear and tear. It also nourishes and moisturizes the leather, enabling it to breathe and stay flexible.
