The Many Benefits Of Hair Coloring

By Judy Sullivan

Over the ages people have always devised ways to improve their looks, to conform to the dictates of fashion or even to look younger. Hair coloring must be one of the most common methods employed to achieve all of the above. It is a hugely popular method of obtaining a different look, whatever the motivation behind the desire to look different. Dyeing the head is, without a doubt, the most popular cosmetic procedure in the world today.

The practice is as hold as humankind itself. About seventy years ago, only seven per cent of American women used dye. This was mostly for the purpose of concealing a greying mane and the subsequent color was almost always the same as the original. Today more than three quarters of American women use dye and they are much more adventurous, changing their color according to fashion or personal taste.

But it is not only women that dye. Men and teenagers of both sexes see dyeing as a normal, perfectly ordinary part of their personal hygiene and self care routines. Dyeing takes many forms, from simply enriching the present color to completely changing the color. Streaks, highlights and accentuations are all popular too. It may even be said that dyeing is a part of modern culture.

When determined to change color, there are two basic options namely whether to use a home kit or whether to leave the task to a professional at a salon. The former option is much cheaper, of course, but there are no guarantees that the result will be satisfactory. Visiting a salon can cost up to five times the price of a home kit, but the likelihood of a disaster is much smaller.

Most dyes that are deemed to be permanent, which means that it will outlast at least twelve shampoos, contain at least one of two chemicals that may cause harm. The first one is ammonia. This chemical splits the cuticles, allowing the dye to penetrate deeply. The other one is peroxide, which can cause dryness and a loss of volume. Most dyes also contain alcohol and this can also cause dryness and split ends.

Cosmetic experts are unanimous in recommending the use of professionals for dyeing purposes. There is simply too much that can go wrong with self help products. The chemicals in these products inevitable cause harm and the harm can become long term if these products are used without proper precautions. Salons understand the fact that the dyes are apt to cause damage and they use additional products to eliminate or lessen the potential harm.

There are many advantages in changing color or in hiding grey. Many people feel more confident knowing that they look good. It is a fact that a good dye can make some people look much younger and in the youth orientated modern world this is important to many people. Some people use dyes because they simply want to make a lifestyle change and this is one of the easiest ways in which to achieve a completely new look.

Hair coloring has been around for many thousands of years and it remains one of the best ways I which to obtain a new look. In these days the practice is safer and there are almost no salons that cannot offer these services professionally. It is fun and it can do much to bolster confidence and if this is the case, why not.
